Loved: House of Night Otherworld (Book 1)
by P.C. & Kristin Cast
“It’s Zoey’s eighteenth birthmas and the Nerd Herd has been scattered across the country busily adulting for almost a year when Stark calls them back to Tulsa to surprise Z. But all in not well in T-Town. Strange, dark signs are appearing – could it be possible Neferet is stirring? Not willing to chance disaster striking again, Zoey calls on her newly reunited friends to circle with her and add a layer of protection over Neferet’s grotto jail. Easy-peasy, right?
Wrong. Nothing at the House of Night is ever as it seems.
With rabid red vampyres closing in, Zoey and the Nerd Herd must come together again and battle evil. But a year is a long time. Have these old friends grown too far apart?
When the world fractures and allies become enemies, will darkness devour friendships or will light save those she’s loved?”
I was majorly into House of Night when the series was originally out, I think I got into it from almost halfway through publishing, but have every single book, including the novellas. So when I heard that there was a new story to celebrate the 10th anniversary I knew I had to have it. I’m not too sure that you need to have read the House of Night series, but it would definitely help with all the backstory, but it is explained as we go through the book.
Zoey has a dream where Kalona visits her and warns her that trouble could be coming. Kramisha has a poetry prophecy which also seems to warn of trouble. After finding out these warnings, some of the group go to check on Neferet’s grotto, where Aphrodite has a vision, which definitely warns of trouble. Zoey wants to call her Nerd Herd, but finds out that they are all on their way or in Tulsa already for her birthday, so she holds off on a meeting until everyone has arrived.
I was not sure that I wanted to go back to the House of Night, as everything was wrapped up so well. However, this book is amazing and was a perfect story to go back with. I also loved the touch on depression and mental health.
My favourite characters are all of the Nerd Herd, I love them and they will always hold a special place in my heart. I really enjoyed the parts on homesickness as they have moved away, and how some are not, but that is how life is, and I just loved this aspect.
Favourite part? That is really difficult, I would say all of it, but there were a couple of parts that were slower. Therefore, I would say once the Nerd Herd have got together and ‘having an adventure’ again. There were plenty of twists and turns, we got to learn more than the Nerd Herd at points and I was just like *shouts at book* “this is the truth!”
Loved does end on a cliffhanger of sorts. There is a second book, Lost, coming on July 10th.
While reading this book, I described it as a come back of the Nerd Herd. I would recommend this to anyone, especially if you enjoyed the House of night series. 3 out of 5.
